Types of Welding Eye and Face Protection Available

A wide range of welding eye and face protection is available, the selection of which depends on the type and extent of welding work being undertaken.

Welding glasses are suitable for general eye protection and can be worn under helmets for added protection.  Welding goggles provide a sealed fit around the eyes and are suitable for environments with airborne hazards such as dust, fine particles and fumes.  Welding goggles are particularly suitable for gas welding & cutting due to the lower light intensity compared to other processes.

Welding helmets offer superior eye and full-face protection for heavy-duty extended use.  These are available as either passive type (UV & IR tinted glass of a fixed shade); or electronic/auto-darkening models which may include adjustable sensitivity & shade delay. Welding eye protection for MIG, TIG, and stick processes is effectively provided by a welding helmet with auto-darkening & shade settings features.  If using a passive welding helmet, a higher lens shade is required for MIG welding due to the higher light intensity & radiation hazard.

Frequently Asked Questions

Welding goggles are versatile eye protection worn by workers when performing welding jobs. The goggles are designed to shield eyes from harmful intense bright light, including ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) radiation, through the use of specialised lenses designed to filter these hazards.  Welding goggles also provide a physical barrier against flying sparks and debris emitted during welding operations.

Welding glasses provide a good level of safety protection for less intensive welding jobs.  Welding goggles provide a higher level of protection as they offer a sealed fit around the eyes and are more effective for use in applications with airborne hazards such as dust, fine particles and fumes.

It is recommended to match goggles with the particular type of welding process being undertaken, due to the specific shade levels required for safe & effective eye protection. For example, a higher lens shade is required for MIG welding because of the higher light intensity & radiation hazard emitted by this process.

Laser welding eye protection is available and must be certified for this type of welding process.  Different lasers emit different light wavelengths and each requires specific eye protection to be effective.

Welding goggles are reusable when maintained in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations for cleaning and storage. URSafeRite welding goggles are manufactured and tested for compliance with recognised safety standards to ensure your peace-of-mind for personal protection and workplace safety.
