Shop Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)

For sites where ambient air quality is severely compromised and the availability of oxygenated air is restricted, the use of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) is typically required.

A self contained breathing apparatus system provides an independent supply of clean portable air readily available to the wearer so that the ambient site air does not need to be used for breathing.

URSafeRite’s comprehensive collection of SCBA systems provides best-in-market equipment that is tested and certified to recognised international product safety standards.  Our range is engineered to provide dependable, durable and comfortable self-contained breathing apparatus for the most demanding of applications including confined-space work, marine, firefighting and industrial uses.

Don’t risk other inferior gear!  Browse URSafeRite’s SCBA range now and shop our full collections of respiratory protection and powered air purifying respiratory equipment to select the ultimate in respiratory protection for every job.

Explore the Components and Features of SCBA Systems

A comprehensive SCBA system will include a storage tank (e.g. cylinder) for an independent supply of clean breathable air; a pressure regulator to adjust compressed air to a user-level; facepiece with a secure seal; a backpack-type harness to carry the equipment safely; a demand value to supply air when required; and an alarm system to warn of low supply.

When looking for and evaluating SCBA systems, check and compare the above features to ensure you select equipment that will provide reliable, effective and comfortable clean air delivery to keep you safe in the most demanding work environments.

Applications and Industries Benefiting from SCBA

SCBA systems are widely used across a range of applications where the ambient site air is severely hazardous, oxygen depleted and/or limited in supply, such that regular respiratory protection would be ineffective.  These applications include confined-space entry and rescue; firefighting and emergency response/Hazmat; marine and offshore; and industries such as hazardous waste/chemicals and oil/gas.

For each of these specialist applications, SCBA systems must be properly specified to match the job requirements including duration of use and comfort & fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Unlike other types of respirators, self-contained breathing apparatus does not draw ambient air, filter it, and provide it to the wearer.  Instead, SCBA systems provide their own independent compressed air supply stored within a tank or cylinder which is carried by the wearer, hence the term “self-contained”.

Correct fit and adjustability are essential for SCBA equipment to ensure ease-of-movement to permit work to be carried out while delivering the highest safety respiratory protection at the same time.  Adjustment ranges for chest belts and shoulder straps are particularly important when selecting and fitting your SCBA gear.  The facepiece and helmet must fit snugly with adjustments for straps, buckles and headbands to provide a comfortable fit and an effective seal.

Frequent inspection and regular scheduled maintenance are important for ongoing SCBA reliability and effective personal safety.  Prior to wearing SCBA, all components should be thoroughly inspected for their condition and completeness.  After use, the SCBA gear should again be inspected, the facepiece cleaned and all components stored in a clean & dry environment. For high-demand SCBA equipment an annual service is recommended by an authorised manufacturer representative.

Given the advanced equipment specifications and high-risk working conditions associated with SCBA applications, proper user-training is important to understand how the equipment works and best utilised for personal safety.  For new SCBA users, detailed initial training and test-wearing should be undertaken before active site use is permitted.  Annual refresher training is recommended for all SCBA users on an ongoing basis.
