Safe work authorities require a risk assessment process to determine the fall hazards and appropriate fall protection required for the job.  Working at height safety programs often require several different types of height safety equipment to be used to manage identified risks, for example a combination of a body harness, fall arrester, ropes and anchor points.

Keep fall protection gear stored properly in a kit bag to keep it clean, dry, and away from direct sunlight.  Clean when necessary using only mild soap solution and dry fully before storage. Regularly inspect for any wear or damage and replace if any component appears compromised.

A lanyard provides a connection from a worker’s body harness to an anchor point. A fall arrest system provides the safe stopping of a person already falling, designed to prevent the person from hitting the ground or an adjacent hazard.

A body harness must be correctly selected according to the size of the worker and then adjusted by following the manufacturer fitting instructions to ensure correct positioning of all straps and D-rings.  The harness should fit snugly while still permitting a full range of movement.
